Special Education Consultants to Regular Teachers

Consultants are central office staff members who provide indirect services to exceptional children by working with the regular classroom teacher.

  • These consultants usually also instruct pupils in diagnostic and demonstration sessions, do some tutoring and counsel with both pupils and parents.
  • They also prepare specialized instructional materials and instruct the regular and the handicapped child in the use of special equipment and materials.
  • Consultants are defined as devoting 50% or more of their time to indirect services.
  • In some cases a distinction is made between the teacher consultant who spends 25-50% of her time in direct teaching and the remainder in consultative services and the resource consultant who provides less than 25% in direct services to children.
