Consultants are central office staff members who provide indirect services to exceptional children by working with the regular classroom teacher.
These consultants usually also instruct pupils in diagnostic and demonstration sessions, do some tutoring and counsel with both pupils and parents.
They also prepare specialized instructional materials and instruct the regular and the handicapped child in the use of special equipment and materials.
Consultants are defined as devoting 50% or more of their time to indirect services.
In some cases a distinction is made between the teacher consultant who spends 25-50% of her time in direct teaching and the remainder in consultative services and the resource consultant who provides less than 25% in direct services to children.
