Lesson 4: Theoretical Perspectives on Creativity

Perceptual theories

Schachtel (1959) elaborated perceptual theory of creative process. According to him-

  • Motivation for creativity lies in the need to relate to the external world.
  • Creativity results from a perceptual openness which allows our object to be approached repeatedly from different perspectives.
  • Perceptual activity is accompanied by intense interest not bound by the rules.
  • Perception is general mental activity. It is a source of all human psychological functioning.
