Special issues in testing preschoolers

The special issues to be considered while assessing preschoolers include

• Assessment procedures should reflect normal development characteristics of preschool age group
• Assessment should be conducted by interdisciplinary team with inclusion of family members
• Team should use standardized tests, informal instruments, natural setting techniques appropriate for each preschool child.
• Information from each child’s relevant environment should be collected.
• The child’s native language or primary means of communication should be tested.
• Close monitoring should be done while evaluating mild delayed children.
• False assessment/identification changes in parent child interactions and diminished expectations held for the child.
• Unidentification of children with developmental problems also is possible in assessing very young children.
