  • China ranks first in area and production followed by Russian Federation, Ukraine, Poland and India. India ranks fifth in area and production.
  • Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are the major potato producer states in the country.
  • Potato production increased from 1.54 million tonnes from an area of 0.234 million ha during 1949-50 to 23.73 million tonnes/ year during 2002 from an area of 1.26 million ha.
