There is a stigma attached to mental ill-health and, therefore, there will be tendencies on the part of the parents and relations of children not to reveal cases of mental disorders and behaviour problems to the proper authorities. The referrals to the clinic will come through the following authorities or agencies:


Types of cases
A child has to be taken as a complete personality, as an aggregate of body, emotions and intellect. Failure of integra­tion of this component may result in mental break-down, maladjustments, which need repairs and treatment. The follow­ing are types of cases which may be referred to a Child Guidance Clinic:

  1. Inexplicable failures and backwardness at school
  2. Intellectual difficulties, sub-normal mental growth
  3. Truancy
  4. Nail-biting, thumb-sucking, bed-wetting
  5. Vomiting attacks
  6. Physical habit disorders
  7. Losing weight
  8. Stammering
  9. Nervousness, anxiety) temper-tantrums, etc.
  10. Delinquency and defiance
  11. Social misbehaviour
  12. Stealing
  13. Sexual misbehaviour
  14. Mental disorders
