The four main models of counseling services

Role of college counselors:- The role of college counselors vary and are influenced by the models under which they operate.

  1. Counselling as psychotherapy: Emphasizes long term counselling with a small percentage of students.
  2. The counselor deals with personality change and refers other vocational and educational concerns to student academic advisors.

  3. Counselling as vocational guidance: Emphasizes helping students productively related to academic and career matters.
  4. The counselor deals with academic or vocations for undecided students and refers those with personal / emotional problems to other agencies.

  5. Counselling as traditionally defined: Emphasizes a broad range of counselling services, including a short / long term relationships.
  6. Those counselors that deal with personal, academic and career concerns, their role is diverse.

  7. Counselling as consultation: Emphasizes working with various organizations and personnel who have a direct impact on student mental health. They offer indirect services to students through strategic interventions.
