ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT OF ECCD PROGRAMMES
Lesson 03: Application of educational philosophies / theories to ECE

Frederich Froebel

Froebel was the originator of kindergarten method. He strongly believed that, preschool stage is an essential step in the whole ladder of educational experience some of his major views that have made an impact on the content and the methodology of ECE are:

t

  • Education should aim at fostering the natural development of the children. Therefore the curriculum at ECE stage should be child centered and based on the nature and interest of children.
  • It should be so designed to ensure step by step progress of the child.
  • Each child has his own individuality which must be respected.
  • An ECE programme must maintain a balance between freedom and a structured program to ensure that he learns the necessary skills, knowledge and values in a systematic and organized way.
  • Play serves as a very basis of development. Play therefore should be the medium for imparting ECE. Some part of each day should be spent in free play and the rest in structured and guided play activities.
