ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT OF ECCD PROGRAMMES
Lesson 03: Application of educational philosophies / theories to ECE

Swami Vivekananda

Main features of his educational philosophy are

  • “Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man.”
  • The aim of education is formation of character.
  • Self- teaching: Each of us has to teach ourselves. “A child educates itself.”
  • Living examples: Teacher’s actions should make an impression more than her words.
  • Discipline through positive suggestions: the child should be encouraged to develop positive ideas as negative ideas weaken their personality.
  • Concentration as the only method of education: “The power of concentration is the only key to the treasure house of knowledge”.
  • Qualities of the learner: “The conditions necessary for the learner are purity, a real thirst after knowledge and perseverance.”
  • Education and physical strength: one has to be hale and hearty to receive good education.
  • Education is to be based on western science coupled with Vedanta.
