Monitoring and controlling

Monitoring: means being alert to and continuously observing for compliance with standards.
Controlling: means

• The standards which are set and expected from each service in the center.
  
• To measure the performance against the standards.
  
• To correct deviations from established standards and plans.
  

Monitoring and controlling is essential for quality and functions that each staff member must be concerned about daily, hourly and from moment to moment.

Evaluation: It is an essential component in monitoring and controlling child development center. The different kinds of evaluation are

Types of Evaluation

1. Programme evaluation: This is an informal process. Children’s positive behavior is a clue which implies the programme is meeting many of their needs.
2. Teacher’s evaluation: The teachers evaluate their planning, organizing and interacting with the children measuring their action against their professional standards. Teachers will make adjustment to correct their shortcomings. Teachers have to monitor, evaluate and control from moment to moment.
   Ex. When a learning task is given to the children, and if they are unable to perform, then the teachers conclude that the task is too difficult. Keeping records on children helps parents and others to check whether developmental milestones are achieved, accordingly teachers plan activities.
3. Parent’s evaluation: Parents evaluation of satisfaction will be apparent when the center gets requests from friends and acquaintances of the enrolled children. Checking admissions and dropouts or the reasons for both can help to gain clues regarding the parent’s evaluation of the particular center’s programme and service.
4. The community and professional’s evaluation: Quality control functions are performed by licensing personal. A policy board member or an outside professional may come into the center to evaluate. The people of the community also form the opinion about the center from what they see and hear around the community.
5. The manager evaluation: The manager monitors the children’s programme for the purpose of comparing performance with the goals of the center and with current professional standards. Spot checking can be done daily on an informal basis. Periodically more formalized procedures are needed such as checking lesson plans, taking detailed notes in each group or using checklists.
1. The monetary area: Money management must continuously be evaluated. Manager will be responsible for careful, honest and accurate accounting in both collecting fees and paying expenses.
2. The physical part: The safety, sanitation, security and aesthetics of the entire physical area in the child development center may be the manager’s responsibility. The play ground must be scrutinized periodically for dangerous equipment. Painting of outdoor equipment should be regularly done to keep an attractive appearance. General tidiness should be encouraged among the staff. Encouraging children too to maintain clean and tidy surroundings is important. Especially fire safety must be first on the agenda.
