Staffing

ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT OF ECCD PROGRAMMES
Lesson 06: Management of ECCE Programme - Process

Staffing

People are the human resources that hold the key to meeting the goals of a child development center. Staffing is the process of recruiting and dealing with the human resources required to perform the functions of the center. In choosing the staff, the manager’s responsibilities include

  1. Locating the people who can best perform the required tasks.
  2. Encouraging creative performance and cooperative effort.
  3. Removing any roadblocks hindering success.
  4. Monitoring performance to assure high quality services that parents, children and society deserve.

Hiring new staff

When a staff member resigns or retires, reanalyze the situation considering various alternative organizational structures. We are entering an era in which potential employees may have many more employment opportunities than were available previously. Hence fine efforts should be considered for making the school attractive place to work.

  • Provide attractive salaries, benefits and working conditions: The need for child development workers are tremendously increasing as many of the parents with children under five are in the work force. Parents should pay fees that give an ample wage to the people who care for their child and make it possible for them to work without worry about the child.
  • Provide a supportive environment: A manager should minimize the pressures on employees that will help the center become a good place to work; friendly, caring and attractive.
  • Build a reputation of excellence: Parents who are satisfied with the center recommend others in joining either for employment or to admit their children. Attractive brochures describing new services available in the center; will give positive opinion about the center.
  • Work for stability in staff: A hallmark of a good place to work is a center that seldom has a vacancy unless someone retires or has to move away due to transfer. A stable staff is the dream of every manager. When the conditions mentioned in their selection is met, staff stability is a possibility.
