Cognitive social learning theory

Walter Mischel (1973) pointed out that there are five “person variables”, which determine how people will interact with the environment

  • Competencies- Capacities of persons such as intelligence, memory, creativity, physical skills and abilities which affect the way the person learns and behaves.

  • Encoding strategies - This refers to the way we take information about objects and events in the environment. It is also the way in which we categorize other people. The perceptions of an individual strongly influence his/her behavior.

  • Expectancies - Our expectations decide the way we behave. If we expect positive reinforcement for a certain behavior, we will indulge in it.

  • Values - what we value is critically important in deciding how we behave. Behaviors that produce the most valued outcomes for us are the behaviors we will pursue.

  • Self regulatory system - Include self imposed goals and aspirations which affect behavior. They also include the standards by which we assess our behavior. Eg. Rewarding / not rewarding self.
