Lesson 15 : Muscular System

Definitions

Skeletal Muscles: Muscles those attached to skeletal system and are voluntary in functions. These muscles are also called voluntary or somatic muscles.

Cardiac Muscle: is specialized muscle of heart which is involuntary in function. This is also known as myocardium.

Smooth Muscle: is involuntary muscle of internal organs. These are also known as internal or visceral muscles which are controlled by autonomic nervous system.

Sarcomere: is smallest microscopic structural and functional unit of muscle fibre.

Muscle Fibre: single muscle cell is also called muscle fibre.

Motor Unit: is group of muscle fibbers in a muscle supplied by single neuron.

Isotonic Contraction: contraction of sarcomeres with shortening of its length. This type of contraction helps in body movements.

Isometric contraction: contraction of sarcomeres without shortening of its length. This type of contraction helps in maintaining body posture.
