Lesson 33 : Respiratory System & Functions

Functions of Respiratory System

The respiratory system is one of the vital systems of the body and without this life of any individual is impossible. Main functions in order of their importance are listed below:

  1. Exchange of respiratory gases is most important function by which oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide is eliminated out from the blood. Organs like brain, heart and kidneys require continuous and regular supply of oxygen for their functioning.
  2. Acid-base balance is maintaining normal pH of blood and extra cellular fluids. Respiratory system can regulate the amount of carbon dioxide in the body which is a weak acid. Thus this system helps in maintaining blood pH.
  3. Regulation of normal body temperature also partly depends upon respiration. During exercise and physical work, excessive respiration occurs which helps in removing extra heat from the body. Dog and poultry birds deploy respiratory system for thermoregulation purpose very frequency.
  4. Vocalization or production of sounds for communication between two or more individuals is also performed through respiration.
