Definition

The activities involved in planning and development of a merchandise line for targeted customers, providing them hwith what they want , when they want it, at prices they can afford and are willing to pay.

To achieve best level of control while developing, executing, and deliver­ing a product line that meets the rapidly changing needs of a target market re­quires a very special management professional. Today's apparel merchandiser must be a blend of a logical, analytical thinker and an intuitive, expressive, creative individual. He or she must have the capability of utilizing the inte­grated activity of right-brain and left-brain functions to attain both analytical and creative thought processes.

The merchandising executive must combine logical and analytical thinking with intuitive and expressive creativity.

The merchan­diser must be able to rigorously plan and control the functions involved in de­veloping product, sourcing it, and getting it to the customer on time, as well as have a keen understanding and appreciation for creative design. It is this balance of solid analytical thinking and abstract creative expression that makes the ideal merchandiser such a unique individual.
