Lesson 12: Production

Managing Lighting Equipment

  • Always perform white balance before shooting in a location. Also do it when shifting from indoors to outdoors, and vice versa.
  • Use the right camera filter to get the right picture hue.
  • While most digital video cameras can shoot in low light, use reflectors outdoors or artificial lights for better picture quality.
  • Advise talent to avoid white clothes where possible.
  • Use darker backgrounds for interviews where possible. They make the interviewee stand out.
  • Use backlights for talents where possible. They separate the subject from the background.
  • Do not shoot with the talent against light. For example, do not shoot with the talent in front of the window. Rather use the window to light up the interviewee.
