Logging

Instructional Video Production 4(1+3)

Lesson 13: Post-Production

Logging

Logging simply means making a list of all the shots on a tape. This means that we are noting down all the shots in the 'rushes' tape. Remember, our video tape would have an internally recorded time code to enable us to identify at what reading a particular shot is situated. Logging tapes helps us in locating the right shot on the source tapes quickly without having to rewind and forward the tapes again and again. A typical log sheet would look like the one in Exhibit 4.8. Notice that the log sheet has the production title, tape number, page number, and the numbers of all the shots in the source tape listed one after the other along with the time codes. We may want to round off or highlight the right take we want to use in the film with a coloured marker.

Other log sheets, or ingests as they are called, have additional information such as camera movements, sound details, and ok or not good (NG) takes. Exhibit 4.9 shows a log sheet with additional information.
