Lesson 11 : Handling of Different Types of Camera

Method of holding and exposing camera

Camera gripped firmly with both hands and pressed against the face. Both elbows braced against body. Feet spread wide part. Strap is tight, camera is held firmly. Photographer’s elbows area braced against his body. Camera is braced firmly against photographer’s check. Eye is close to the sports finder window. Camera is firmly supported with both hands. Elbows are braced against the body. Many cameras including box, twin-lens reflex and some single lens reflex types are designed for waist-level operation. Get a solid grip on the camera with both hands and hold it firmly against your body. At the time of exposure, hold your breath and then press the click gently. Do not job the shutter release. For better steadiness place the legs apart with one slightly infront of the other. If your camera has a ‘T’ or ‘B’ setting for prolonged exposures and if you have set your camera at ‘T’ or ‘B’, the camera should not be hand-held. In this case the best support is a tripod, table or any other solid support. Press camera firmly against support with one hand, gently operate shutter release with the other.

Most 35 mm cameras, some single lens reflexes and a few box cameras have eye-level view finders. Grasp the camera firmly in both hands and press it against your face with your eye to the view finder window. Most people find that they can hold the camera steadier if they keep their elbows tucked in. However, is to feel steady and comfortable. Remember to operate the shutter release with a gentle squeezing motion.
