Lesson 12 : Types of Leaders

Emergent Leaders

They are those who exercise influence on the basis of their personal qualities, any specialization, office of power, some political affiliation or some other acquired qualities such as progressive farmers, head of village council, i.e. panchayat, cooperative or member of a voluntary or political organization.

These leaders who have emerge in the rural set up due to availability of new opportunities in the villages are known by different names such as:

  • Personal Leaders: These leaders are persons who are respected because of their knowledge and skills in a particular field. These leaders have wide experience and mastery of the field. The examples of personal leaders include progressive farmer, educated youth who follow a vocation in a village, ex-servicemen of different specialized fields who settle down in their home village after retirement and resident school teachers. These all personal leaders exercise considerable influence over the villagers.

  • Professional Leaders: These leaders are respected because of their professional status or specialized training in some field and are able to influence the villagers because of these characteristics. These leaders work full time as an occupation, and is paid for his work. Examples are village extension workers, village school teachers etc.

  • Lay Leaders: The lay leaders may or may not have received special training, are not paid for their work, and generally works part time with local group organizations e.g. youth club president or gram sahayak. Lay leaders are also called volunteer or local or natural leaders. These local leaders may be either formal leaders or in-formal leaders, depending on whether they are regular office bearers of organized groups or not.

  • Political Leaders: These leaders are associated with political parties and serve as political persons in the village where they work. They have influence over the village people due to their initiatives and efforts contributed in the party. Political leaders can do a great deal of work in the village.

  • Social Leaders: Leaders of various social organizations in the villages have a great influence on people because of their active involvement in development of people.
