Wells

  • Wells are indicative of the life of a garden, since they are supposed to supply water.
  • A well is a necessary adjunct of a garden.
  • In many gardens, they are used as an important feature.
  • They are designed in such a manner that they completely merge with the architecture of the house and the garden.
  • Step-wells are elaborate water structures The step-wells of Gujarat in India are a unique tribute to architecture and engineering.

  • The well may be octagonal, circular or square and is approached by a long fight of steps. Primarily it is "a utilitarian structure.
  • Some of the wells which were richly decorated might have been used by royalty.
  • The step-well at Mehmedabad, 25 km from Ahmedabad, constructed in the 15th century was used exclusively as a retreat well, for royal family in the gardens of a pleasure palace.
