Care and Maintenance

• In places having a severe winter, delicate plants need protection. When plants are small a glass sheet resting on the rocks may be placed over the plants. For larger plants four strong galvanized wires may be inserted in the ground and the glass can be placed over this.
• If the weather is very cold the sides should also be covered with glass or polythene sheets.
• The rock garden should be weeded periodically and all dying or dead leaves and branches should be removed.
• The rockery should be watered by sprinkling water over the rocks as the rains would have watered.
• The plants should be top dressed every year with compost consisting of good sterilized garden soil, fine sand, and leaf- mould in equal proportion.
• The top few centimeters of soil is scraped out and in its place the new composts is filled in along with a little quantity of bone meal.
• Periodically, the rock plants should be fed with liquid manure also. If the soil in any pocket turns sour, replanting fresh soil will be a necessity.
