Intestine

INTESTINE

  • It shows four tunics as in glandular stomach. But epithelium (simple columnar) shows goblet cells
  • The mucosal glands (crypts of Lieberkuhn) also show goblet cells. Epithelium and lamina propria form villi

Small Intestine

  • Duodenum (View image) : Brunner’s glands are observed in submucosa which are branched tubuloalveolar type. Villi are spatula shaped
  • Jejunum (View image) : Villi are slender, elongated filiform or leaf like
  • Ileum (View image) : Villi are few short and tongue or club shaped. Aggregated lymphatic nodules (Payer’s patches) are seen in submucosa extending into lamina propria along antemesenteric border

Large intestine (View image)

  • Layers are as in small intestine
  • Villi are absent. Goblet cells are more in number
