Synonym: “honey comb” ring worm

Definition

  • Favus commonly known as “honey comb” ring worm is a chronic dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton schoenleinii & Microsporum gypseum and Microsprum gallinae.

Incidence

  • In dogs, heads & paws are most commonly affected while in cats, ears are affected.

Gross lesions

  • Dense, felt-like aggregates of the fungus on the skin, having a central depression
  • Removal of crust, cup shaped depression with raised borders
  • Confluence of such lesions giving a 'honey-combed' appearance

Microscopic lesions

  • Fungus is found only in the horny layer
  • Intense hyperaemia and cellular infiltration is found in the corium

Diagnosis

  • Microscopic examination of skin scrappings for the presence of spores & mycelia.
