CANDIDIASIS

Synonym : Moniliasis, thrush

Definition

It is a sporadic disease involving upper alimentray tract of man, swine and poultry (thrush) and mammary gland in dairy animals

  • Hypovitaminosis –A and prolonged use of antibiotics may assume the role of pathogens
  • In poultry, young chickens and turkey affecting usually oesophagus, crop and proventriculus

Aetiology

  • Candida sp.

Clinical signs

  • Listless, stunted with poor feathering

Gross lesions

  • Crop showed "turkish towel appearance" with raised patches of ulceration and pseudo membrane
  • Diphtheritic membrane is found in the small intestine

Microscopic lesions

  • In tissue sections: Organisms(pseudohypha) can be seen penetrating, more or less perpendicularly the keratinized squamous epithelium of the crop, while lymphocytes and histiocytes infiltrate the submucosa.

Diagnosis

  • Demonstration of causative fungus in the lesions
