Gross specimens 

  • FMD - Mouth lesion – Cattle
    • The vesicles are found on the dorsum of the tongue especially near its anterior part& lateral aspects,on the mucosa of lips,cheeks,gums,dental pad & hard palate.
    • Sometimes lesions are found on the muzzle&external nares.
  • FMD -Heart – Calf
    • The affected heart is dilated & flabby.
    • The ventricular musculature,the septal wall of the left ventricle & the papillary muscles are affected which show grayish streaks giving the heart a “tigroid”appearance.
  • Rinderpest - Tongue – Cattle
    • Vesicles are noticed on the ventral surface of the free portion of the tongue
    • Vesicles rupture and form erosions
  • Rinderest - Abomasum – Cattle
    • Necrotic foci accompanied by haemorrhagic streaks are visible
    • The folds of abomasum are thick & edematous and the contents are chocolate coloured due to the presence of blood

  • Rinderpest - Rectum - Bullock
    • The folds of rectal mucosa shows streaks of haemorrhages giving rectum the characteristic”zebra markings”appearance
  • Blue tongue - Tongue – Sheep
    • The tongue is cyanotic and shows hyperaemia,edema and multiple haemorrhages.
    • Sometimes ulcers may be seen on the lateral surface adjacent to the teeth.
  • Hog cholera - Larynx and trachea - Pig
    • Haemorrhages in the mucosa of larynx and trachea
    • Necrotic ulcers may also be noticed
  • Hog cholera - Kidney – Pig
    • The mucosa of caecum show spherical,circumscribed,single or multiple ulcers which originate as small congested areas and develop into encrusted characteristic “button shaped”ulcers.
