Specific Antidotes

SPECIFIC ANTIDOTES

  • Specific antidotes reduce or abolish the effects of poisons through a variety of mechanisms, which may be categorized as follows:
    • On receptors which may be stimulated, blocked or bypassed
    • On enzymes which may be inhibited or reactivated
    • By displacement from tissue binding sites
    • By exchanging with the poison
    • By replenishment of the essential substance
    • By binding to the poison (chelation)
