• Gene sanctuaries suffer from certain limitations as listed below
• They are easiest to demarcate, difficult to establish and very difficult to maintain. This is particularly so in a country like India, which has an ever increasing population pressure
• These cannot conserve the variability found in crop plants, for which ex situ conservation is the only answer
