Right side displacement of abomasum

RIGHT - SIDE DISPLACEMENT OF THE ABOMASUM (RDA) AND ABOMASAL VOLVULUS (AV)

Etiology

  • Atony is the precursor of dilatation and displace­ment, and consequently abomasal volvulus.

Occurrence and incidence

  • Lactating dairy cows: within the period 3-6 weeks after calving. Calves: occurs in young calves from a few weeks of age up to 6 months

Risk factors

  • Feeding of high levels of grain to high ­producing dairy cows in early lactation .
  • The risk increased with increasing age,
  • Dairy cattle are at a much higher risk than beef cattle. 
  •  The case fatality rate for abomasal volvulus - 23.5%
