Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)

DISSEMINATED INTRAVASCULAR COAGULATION (DIC)

  • DIC occurs secondary to other diseases.
  • In acute cases, uncontrolled hemorrhaging with inability to form a clot.
  • All coagulation screening tests are prolonged.
  • Death is caused by extensive microthrombosis or circulatory failure.
  • If animal survives acute state, chronic form can ensue. 
  • Treatment should be directed at underlying problem.
  • Supportive care, electrolytes etc. are recommended.
