TREATMENT

Medications

  • The most specific and effective therapy is elimination of the source of antigenic stimulation.
  • Immunosuppressive drugs are used in dogs and cats
  • Corticosteroids, azathioprine, chlorambucil, cyclophosphamide, and cyclosporine have been used
  • Thromboxane is a major cause of glomerular inflammation associated with immune complexes; Low-dose aspirin is given to decrease thromboxane production.
  • Aspirin decreases platelet aggregation and resultant thromboembolic disease.
  • Low-dose aspirin (5–10 mg/kg PO q 24–48h)
  • Enalapril (0.5 mg/kg q12–24h), is recommended in dogs for both its antihypertensive and antiproteinuric effects.
