WILLIAM'S METHOD OF AUSCULTATION

  • William y combining auscultation of the reticulum with palpation of the rumen, identified the grunt which is the useful piece of clinical evidence. The chest piece of phonendoscope is held in the left hand and placed at the interspace between the 7th and 8th rib at the level of the costochondral junction. It will detect a “tinkling” sound, when the reticulum contracts.
  • Simultaneously, rumen is to be palpated by right hand in the hollow of left flank to establish co-relation between movements of the reticulum and rumen. Traumatic reticulo-peritonitis can be diagnosed y hearing the reticular grunt 2 or 3 seconds before primary ruminal contractions. Most of the time, the grunt may e heard during relaxation of reticulum i.e. when the dorsal ruminal sac motility is left in left flank. The reason being penetration of foreign body is causing a localized area of inflammation.
