Exercise: Identification of Insect Pests of Okra and Cucurbits and their damage Symptoms

OKRA:
1 Cotton leaf hopper, Amrasca biguttula biguttula (Cicadellidae: Hemiptera)
  • Eggs: Pear shaped, elongated and yellowish white in colour.
  • Nymphs: Whitish pale green, wingless and moves in a peculiar fashion, diagonally.
  • Adults: Wedge shaped, 2-3 mm long, pale green in colour with a black dot on posterior portion of each forewing. Adults of winter generation are slightly reddish in colour.

2. Shoot and fruit borers; Earias vittella, (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera.)
  • Larvae: Full grown caterpillars are dull green, 20 mm long having tiny stout bristles and a series of longitudinal black spots on the body.
  • Adults: The moths are yellow having a narrow light longitudinal green band in the middle of the fore wing and measure about 25 mm across the wings.

3. Cotton whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Aleyrodidae: Hemiptera)
  • Eggs: Stalked, sub-elliptical and light yellow at first and turns brown later on.
  • Nymphs: On emergence look elliptical and soon fix their mouthparts into plant tissue. They are sluggish creatures, clustered together on the underside of the leaves and their pale bodies make them stand out against the green background.
  • Adults: whiteflies are small insects with white coloured wings.

4. Red cotton bug, Dysdercus koenigii (Pyrrhocoridae : Hemiptera)
  • Eggs: Spherical, bright yellow.
  • Nymphs: Young nymphs have flabby abdomens, but as they grow older, they become more slender and develop black markings on the body.
  • Adults: Red coloured bugs.
