Origin and distribution

The crop has been distributed all over the tropical and sub tropical regions of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, tropical east Africa, Brazil. In India, it is found in the sub tropical Himalayan regions from Kumaon to Nepal. It is cultivated in parts of Rajasthan, Maharastra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu, it is cultivated for more than 25 years. Area and Production: There are about 10,000 ha are under this crop in the country.
