Origin and distribution

Basically, the rose is a temperate plant. The plant is indigenous to Europe and the Middle Eastern countries especially, Iran, Afghanistan and Turkey. It is believed that the Damask rose originated in Damascus and was introduced into the European countries. The damask rose is cultivated in Bulgaria, Turkey, France, Italy, Morocco, Russia and India. Bulgaria, Turkey and Morocco are the largest producers of rose oil in the world. Area and production In India, scented rose cultivation is mainly confined to the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, in an area of 3000 ha. Out of this, Uttar- Pradesh, with 2500 ha under rose cultivation, is the leading rose growing state in the country. India is producing about 80 to 100 kg rose oil annually. At present, Rajasthan produces only rose water; although a very high quality rose oil can be produced from the Haldighati plantation. |
