Classification

  • Type I diabetes occurs due to auto immune damage in genetically susceptible individuals. Viral destruction of β cell could also be a cause, but a rare one. In type I diabetes there is gross insulin deficiency and the disease progresses rapidly .

  • Type II diabetes develops insidiously and there is gradual reduction of insulin secretion. In this condition the skeletal muscles show resistance to insulin action. Type II diabetes is closely related to obesity and other life style factors .

  • Malnutrition Related Diabetes Mellitus- In this type of diabetes there is a history of childhood malnutrition and calculi are formed in the pancreas leading to inflammation and destruction of the β cells.
