Absorption of Monosaccharides

Human Nutrition 3(3+0)

Absorption of Monosaccharides

  • Glucose and galactose are absorbed at a faster rate than fructose, and the pentoses are absorbed slowly, due to the fact that they are actively transported while fructose and pentoses are absorbed by diffusion.

  • The absorption of monosaccharides depends on the presence of Na ions and also on the Na: K concentration ratio.
