Lesson 17:Old Age–Nutritional Requirement

Osteoporosis

  • Condition associated with loss in bone density and bone mass, increased vulnerability to fractures.
  • Due to high rate of calcium resorption from bone into blood than that of bone formation.
  • Due to decreased number of cells, decrease in thickness of cortex and increased porosity of bone.
  • Frequent fractures of vertebrae, femur and radius are common.
  • Management: Change in sedentary life style, dietary pattern and reduction in emotional stress. Inclusion of plant based estrogens, isoflavones; genisteines (Soya) reduces menopausal problems and osteoporosis. (fig. Copy from H.N lesson 34)
