Assessment

  1. Body weight: >10% of normal body weight is classified as over weight
    >20% of normal body weight is classified as obesity

  2. % Body weight >normal Degree of obesity
    25 Mild
    50 Moderate
    75 Severe
    100 Very severe/ morbidity

  3. Body mass index (Quetlet index) weight (kg)/height 2(m)

  4. <18.5 Under weight
    18.5-24.9 Normal
    25-29.9 Grade I obesity
    30-40 Grade II obesity
    >40 Grade III obesity

    Body Mass Index: Weight (in kilograms) divided by height squared (in meters); a value of 30 or more indicates obesity.

  5. Waist circumference
    • Men: >40 inches (>102cm)
    • Women: >35 inches (88cm)
  6. Measurement of body fat
    • Harpender calipers: fat at triceps (85-90mm)
    • Lange calipers: abdomen and sub scapular regions
    • USA MRNL calipers: sub coastal sites
  7. Waist to hip ratio: Normal 0.7
  8. Broka’s Index= Height in cm-100 = ideal weight (kg)
