Screening is the broad initial individual testing of a child to determine whether the child may be at risk or developmental delay. Screening is the process of assessing a large number of children in order to determine which children should participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
The procedures used for screening are brief and inexpensive relatively to administer because large number of children are included or covered in screening. Screening is based on the assumption that early identification and treatment of particular problem is important. Screening is essential in the context of early intervention. Screening should not be used to provide assessment information about the child or be used to decide eligibility.
