Attachment

It is crucial for child’s social and emotional development. Attachment is a bidirectional process in which the infants and their primary caregivers establish emotional bonds. Interactions resulting in attachment begin at or shortly after birth and are believed to be the well spring for all infants subsequent attachments. The most well known means of assessing attachment is known as strange situation paradigm. In this procedure infants are subjected to a series of social situations involving

• The presence of their mothers
• Presence of their mothers and a stranger
• Absence of mother

Based on the responses to the mother’s return infants are categorized as

• Securely attached
• Insecure-avoidant
• Insecure-ambivalent
