Developmental assessment of Young children 4 (1+3)
Lesson 6:Trends and challenges in developmental assessment of young children

Non discriminatory assessment

Tests or testing procedures do not discriminate against children who come from culturally and linguistically diverse back grounds. Strategies recommended include

  • Administration of tests in child’s native language.
  • Use of multiple measures/alternative assessment gathering information in natural settings to gain holistic picture of child’s performance.
  • Use of culturally relevant tests.
  • Use of appropriated communication styles.
  • Checking of validity of test data by comparing it with information provided by significant people in child’s life.
  • Encouraging family members to participate in assessment.
  • Doing assessment at family’s suitable time and place
  • Including trained cultural guide or interpreter while assessing culturally diverse family.
