Lesson 02: Motor Development during Early Childhood Period

Importance of developing motor skills during early childhood stage

Development of motor skills is very important for later schooling as well as for later activities as an adult. The major objective in an early childhood education programme is development of different motor skills in children. These skills are of two types: gross motor skills and fine motor skills. The gross motor skills involve the control and coordination of large muscles (e.g. running, climbing, jumping, crawling and skipping). Fine motor skills involve the finer muscles, particularly eye and hands/fingers coordination. (e.g. writing, painting, cutting etc.)
