Contributions of Susan Issacs (1895 – 1948) to ECE

Biographical note

Susan Issacs was born in 1895, was a pioneer in Early Childhood Education. She studied a group of children in school setting at Malting House in England and published her findings on the social, emotional and intellectual development of the children. Even now, her books are useful for students of early childhood education. She believed that learning should be linked with experiences. Susan was greatly influenced by the movement of Froebel’s psycho analysis.

Her Contributions:

  1. She published a book on ‘The Nursery Years’, 1927, a classic guide in child guidance and child care.

  2. She dealt with the everyday problems of children like – jealousy and rivalry, fears and fantasies, value of play in education. Then she illustrated some guiding principles for their solution by discussing the child’s developing relationships with the world which surrounds him.

  3. She published another two books –

    1. Social Development in young children,- deals with ego-centric attitudes among the children, hostility and aggression, love and hate, guilt and shame, social relations and sexuality.

    2. ‘Children and Parents’- deals with the problems and difficulties of parents and nursery teachers.
