Lesson 35 : Requirements of Institutional Services

Staff

Every institution for children should have sympathetic and sincere staff members who are interested in the welfare of children, who have understanding of the children's problems and fondness for them. They should understand child's needs and follow certain minimum standards of care in children's institutions. They should be able to establish parent· like relationship with the children. The ratio between the staff and children should be 1-20 for school-going age children and 1-10 for children who are not going to school. For certified institutions, the ratio should also be 1-10 and for specialized institutions the ratio should be as close to 1-5 as possible.

Types of staff
Every institution for children should have a full-time teacher to supervise the work in the institution. He should necessarily be a trained social worker with child welfare bias. He may be known as a Director, Superintendent or a Manager.

Education
Every normal child in an institution must go to a regular school and only for those children, who need special coaching or special care, educational arrangements should be made in the institution itself. The institution should appoint experienced, suitably trained and orientated teaching staff for this purpose. Institution catering o children below the age of 6 could set up a pre-primary class in the institution itself. There should be a small library every institution.
