Lesson 7 : Development of Personality- Humanistic Perspective

Carl Roger’s Self Concept theory

Rogers pointed out that

  • The individual has a strong tendency towards enhancing and bringing out inner potential. However child learns that all the behaviors that she wishes to express for self enhancement does not have parental approval.
  • Since the child needs “positive regard” from parents, the child behaves according to parental prescription and therefore self concept is an image of the self that parents approve; one that meets with parental standards.
  • As child grows older, other person’s perceptions get included in the way she perceives herself.
  • All through the years of growing, there is conflict between child’s self-actualization need and his self concept, which is based on what others think of her.
  • Only when a person is able to reconcile both of these and become “fully functioning individual”, her personality is wholesome.
