Abraham Maslow’s hierarchical theory of motivation

Maslow’s theory points out that “lower needs must be satisfied before higher needs can be addressed”.

Physiological needs are the most immediate and urgent of all needs and when these are not fulfilled, people cannot move to the next level in need hierarchy. Similarly safety, belongingness and self esteem needs must be attended to one after the other in the hierarchy. When all these are satisfactorily fulfilled, individuals aspire for Self Actualization needs. It is therefore a fact that very few individuals aspire to fulfill self actualization needs

Self actualization is a need to develop one's potentials and capacities. The need for self actualization pulls people towards positive states rather than away from negative ones. A lifetime is spent in search of self actualization, since it is never possible to completely achieve this need.
