Motivation
Motivation is the activation or energization of goal – oriented behaviour. It is related to the basic need to minimize pain and maximize pleasure. Motivation is related to but distinct from emotion.
David McClelland classified motivation as
Intrinsic motivation – an individual is considered to be intrinsically motivated if he attributes his achievements to
Factors that he can control (eg. Effort, skill)
Believes that he is an effective agent in reaching desired goals
Is interested in mastering skills, gaining knowledge and is not only result oriented.
Extrinsic motivation – comes from outside factors. The most obvious examples are money, trophies, praise, marks or grades. Extrinsic motivation in the long run, may lead to over justification and reduction in intrinsic motivation.
