David McClelland classified motivation as

  1. Intrinsic motivation – an individual is considered to be intrinsically motivated if he attributes his achievements to

    1. Factors that he can control (eg. Effort, skill)
    2. Believes that he is an effective agent in reaching desired goals
    3. Is interested in mastering skills, gaining knowledge and is not only result oriented.

  2. Extrinsic motivation – comes from outside factors. The most obvious examples are money, trophies, praise, marks or grades. Extrinsic motivation in the long run, may lead to over justification and reduction in intrinsic motivation.
