Saving energy and reducing outdoor air pollution

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
Lesson 22: Role of individuals in conservation of natural resources

Saving energy and reducing outdoor air pollution

  1. Reduce the use of fossil fuels by either walking short distances or using a car pool/sharing a bike/using a public transport.
  2. Plant and care for trees to help absorb Carbon dioxide.
  3. Don’t use electricity to heat space or water.
  4. Use natural resources-sun, wind, trees etc. for heating and cooling purposes.
  5. Lower the cooling load on an air conditioner by using the thermostat setting
  6. Installing energy efficient lighting fixtures i.e. replace bulbs with tube lights
  7. Using floor and ceiling fans
  8. Using whole house window or attic fans
  9. Shut off the lights and fans when not needed.
  10. Use rechargeable batteries.
  11. Keep the bulbs and tubes clean as dust on tubes and bulbs decreases the lighting levels by 20 – 30%.
  12. Use pressure cooker which saves upto 75% of the energy required for cooking.
  13. Keep the vessel covered with a lid during cooking, helps to cook faster, thus saves energy.
