Earthquakes

These are most destructive natural hazards. Earthquake occurs with so little warning. About 50-60% of India is vulnerable to seismic activity of varying intensities. Most vulnerable areas are in Himalayan and sub-Himalayan regions.

Tsunami occurs due to an undersea earthquake, volcanic eruption or submarine landslide. Tsunami word comes from the Japanese language. Tsu means ‘harbour’ and nami means ‘wave’. The wave travels across the ocean at speeds of 500-1000 kmph. When it approaches the land, it compresses up to a height of 30 mts. and crushes the objects in its path. On 26th December 2004, tsunami occurred in India and killed 3,10,000 people.
