Lesson 29: Environmental protection acts

The environment (protection) act

The environment (protection) act launched in the year 1986. This act was passed to protect the environment, as there was a growing concern over the deteriorating state of the environment. The objective is to study, plan and implement the long term requirements of environmental safety, direct and co-ordinate a system of appropriate response to emergencies threatening the environment.

We need to implement this act much more aggressively if our environment is to be protected. The presence of excessive concentrations of harmful chemicals in the atmosphere and aquatic ecosystems leads to the disruption of food chains and a loss of species.

The environment act, 1986, not only has important constitutional implications but also an international background.

  1. The spirit of proclamation adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Environment, held in Stockholm in June 1972 was implemented through this act.
  2. As impacts grew considerably environmental protection became a national priority in 1970’s.
  3. The presence of excessive concentrations of harmful chemicals in the atmosphere & aquatic ecosystems leads to the disruption of food chains & loss of species.
Objectives:
  1. Defining clearly the concept of environmental conservation.
  2. Identifying the universally recognized areas which have threatened life support system.
  3. Enumerating the conservation objectives.
  4. Including the frame work for evolving the National strategy by different countries in to operational plan.
Other acts:
The Rio-summit –Environmental protection involves all.
  1. Right to life – A holistic view.

  3. US holds key to Rio meet success.
  4. Rift likely over forest conservation.
  5. Ec environment chief to boycott Rio summit.
  6. Earth walk project.

Measures:
