Rugs Based on construction modes

Flat Woven rugs: are made on looms. They have no pile. They are usually inexpensive and intended for casual use. Grass, fiber and other flat rugs have been improved so much in appearance that they are suitable for indoors as well as on porches. They are the most attractive without any decoration. Flat woven rugs are fiber rugs, Grass

  1. Fiber rugs: are made from spruce-wood paper twists or yams woven in the basket, or Jacquard weave. They are durable when dry but disintegrate when wet.
  2. Wool and Fiber rugs: are woven on cotton warp with alternate strands of wool and fiber. The wool adds an interesting color element and also pleasing softness.
  3. Grass rugs: are woven in the simplest over-and-under weave from continuous undyed grass strands. Grass frrmats of Southern India are an interesting material in the interiors. They are made from a special variety of grass, called 'kora' grass. These mats are textured; though many of them are coarse and have a simple striped pattern. They are low cost and are available in different widths.
Grass mats are manufactured in a very traditional manner. The 'kora' grass is cut in lengths of five to three feet and left to dry in the sun till they get their fine golden color. It is split along each length to make thin strips. Weaving also takes time. The warp is made of cotton thread that is sized in rich paste. Each thin piece of grass is lightly moistened and passed through the eye of a long stick that acts as a needle. Different colors require different needles. As each line is carefully navigated through the warp, the weaver presses it down to give a smooth finish. Eventually, the surface is given the final polish.
  4. Coir and Jute matting: An alternative to high cost quality furnishing is the economical coir and jute matting as floor coverings. Made from coconut husk, the fibrous center covering of the coconut husk, the coir fiber is deenatural, bio-degrada ble and environment friendly. It is tough and durable, versatile and resilient, resistant to flame and fungi, provides insulation and helps sound modulation. The same applies to jute but coir is long lasting, while jute has a tendency to fade and wear out towards the edges. Coir, however, is a coarser material.
Coir and jute floor products range from doormats to wall-to-wall matting rolls, matting tiles and rubberized coir.
Doormats: The ubiquitous doormats are made in a variety of ways: low pile, brush mats, mesh mats, rope mats, loop mats, matting of different colors and designs made or cut to mat sizes.
  5. Sisal rugs: The new sisal-look wool carpets are proving popular. The fashionable raw, woven texture sisal frr(coir and sea grass) is stylishly translated into the warmth, softness and durability of wool. Sisal rugs are made from a tough, heavy fiber obtained from the leaves of a plant. Some strands are dyed and then used for making rugs.
  6. Linen rugs: These are medium in cost, wear very well, look well and come in a large variety of plain or mixed colors. They are useful in dining rooms, sun rooms, porches and halls.
  7. Rag rugs: Of the manufactured variety these are usually made of cotton rags, in fairly light colors. They are washable and durable but light in weight. Dhurries are an easy substitute for expensive rugs. With its range of colors and affordable price. They range from the traditional geometries to bright continental blended with any style. Also, they are reversible. A dhurrie, thus, lasts longer and is cheaper, easier to maintain than a carpet.
  8. Velvet rugs: Velvet is the simplest form of weave. The pile loops of velvet carpet woven over long wires - one 125wire for each row of loops - which are withdrawn as each row completed. They are made by woven construction on a rather simple loom that does not require use of yam underneath the pile; therefore, th e velvets are less resilient and less expensive other woven pile rugs. The velvet method is also called a tapestry weave when it is used with a low uncut pile for speciial effect. Velvets come in several qualities and in different effects, the frieze twist weave being of the best. Traditionally, velvet has been a solid-color, smooth surfaced, pile - woven carpet, now it comes also in tweeds and stripes.
  9. Tufted carpets and Rugs:

Tufted carpets are gaining popularity in today's world. The process involved in construction of se is cheaper236 than weaving on a loom. Face yam is stitched through primary backing where it is bonded to a secondary backing.

  10. Handmade rugs:

Rug making as a handicraft has been practiced throughout the world by many groups of people with different materials, methods and designs. As with any other handicraft, the design represents artistic development of the people as well as their customs, beliefs and values.
